All families teach their children.  We teach them about safety, manners, how to ride a bike, and sometimes how to read, along with a great many other things.

But how much do we teach them about our religious beliefs and our sacred books?  One way to do this is to create a “Scripture Wall”.  To do this select a wall somewhere in the house.  The wall should have space for a lot of pictures.

Then collect pictures that relate to stories from the scriptures, such as the picture of David and Goliath below.   You can get these from church magazines, from the internet, or from a religious store.

Mount the pictures on your scripture wall and put a short summary of what is portrayed under each picture.  Once you have several pictures on your scripture wall talk with your children about them.  They will start learning about your religious beliefs and you will have a stronger family.

This should work regardless of which church you belong to.

Miss Judys -Christian Family Values

The other day a awfully precious acquaintance of mine contacted with reference to her daughter and her weight. All her life, this young woman has gone on those fanatical diet programs where you lose all that weight and after that a month soon, its all back on with added filling, and afterward she will get depressed and just gives up completely saying “I presume it’s God’s resolve that I am fat.”

Now I be aware of regarding weight (I’ve got a few additional pounds to keep me going in the winter), but like so many things in life, when the going gets difficult, many just give up rather than pushing onward and overcoming those obstacles. It reminds me so much of that picture my mama always had on her wall “Footprints”. Now for you younger folk, it just means that when we’re going through those real challenging times, it feels like no one’s there to lend a hand us and we have a tendency to look to God thinking he’ll immediately magically jump in and unravel all our problems for us.
Well it just doesn’t work that way. God is always there with us, giving us someone to pray to and talk to and give us comfort. When we’re in our lowest moments, most times we have a tendency to just wind up feeling pathetic for ourselves and even when individuals bestow us the best guidance in love, we just don’t plain pay attention. It really is through these times, God is giving us guidance, but it is up to us to take and make it work for us or just stay inflexible and not do anything.

Now back to this young lady, she thought maybe it was a thyroid problem, but after going to the md, that wasn’t it. One moment in time when I was visiting, she was talking about how she’d never find a good Christian man if she did not lose weight and so on. I asked her if she had thought about going to a physical education building, and to my wonder, she had been a member of a awfully upmarket sports club for practically 3 years! Now don’t that take all!
Well my friends, this article just gets a little more goofier. When I asked her why she was paying out so much for a sports club membership that she wasn’t using, she just said that it was like pampering herself following working out. I’m sure many of you are thinking just what I was thinking at the time, “Well then, why aren’t you using it?” She explained that the sports club was a 10 to 15 minute drive away, and she was having a really hard time motivating herself to get in the car and go. Now, we’ve all had those days where getting ourselves motivated is not the easiest of things to do. Now this young lady is only 30, and I’m amazed at this younger generation that looks like they get drowsy by just getting out of bed and eating last night’s cold pizza. Now my precious friend told me just this morning that her daughter had dropped her leisure center membership and had got one of those fancy sports club treadmills so that she’d have no reason not to work out now since it was only 10 feet away from her.

I called the young woman and congratulated her for taking some initiative, and you know what she said?
She said she still was having difficulty getting motivated to get on that treadmill, and that it must just be God’s way for her to be overweight.

Now as all us good Christians know, it can be real hard to bite our tongue, but I just could not believe what I was hearing. Again, I understand about feeling down and stressed out as I went though that a few times in my life, but we can’t just keep waiting for God to come swoop in and do everything for us. That’s just not how it works. It didn’t work for that Microsoft man or the man that created that cute little ipod thingies. They had to bust their butts to make something work for them, and that’s a big lesson for all of us. We have to sometimes get our hands dirty to get what we want in life, including having good Christian family values. It’s so easy to have excuses for not following the Lord’s way, but at the end of the day, we still have to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask, “Did I really put my all into it.”

God Bless,

Miss Judy
